The island of Jura has around two hundred people, several thousand red deer, one road and one distillery — which is also the community's beating heart. George Orwell finished 1984 up the coast at Barnhill. Rebuilt in the 1960s with unusually tall stills to give a lighter spirit, Jura makes an approachable island malt — soft fruit, nut and a wisp of smoke — that has quietly become one of Britain's best-selling single malts.
