Why slopes are prized
Many of the world's greatest vineyards are on slopes. A hillside drains well, is less prone to frost (cold air sinks to the valley floor), and can tilt the vines toward the sun.
- Aspect — the direction a slope faces. In the cool Northern Hemisphere, south-facing slopes catch the most sun.
- Altitude — higher means cooler, with bigger day-night swings (think Mendoza, Salta).
- Water nearby — rivers and lakes reflect light and buffer temperature.
