Bordeaux, in south-west France, is the reference point for fine red blends. A huge region on the Atlantic coast, it's built around a great estuary and two rivers that split it into its famous 'banks'.

Bordeaux almost never relies on one grape. It blends — chiefly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot — so producers can balance power, flesh and perfume, and hedge against a difficult vintage.
