Nebbiolo, the fog grape
In the hills of Piedmont in north-west Italy, Nebbiolo makes some of the world's longest-lived reds. It's paradoxical: pale in colour yet ferociously high in tannin and acid, with haunting aromas of tar, rose, dried cherry and truffle.

Barolo vs Barbaresco
Both are 100% Nebbiolo from neighbouring zones. Barolo tends to be bigger and needs longer ageing; Barbaresco is often a little softer and earlier. Both require years in barrel/bottle before release.
