The Douro & Port
The terraced Douro valley gave the world Port — a wine fortified mid-ferment with grape spirit, leaving it sweet and strong. Its styles split by how they age:
Cask-aged (oxidative)
Tawny family- Tawny (10/20/30/40 yr) — nutty, caramel, amber
- Colheita — a single-vintage tawny
- Ready to drink, often chilled
Bottle-aged (reductive)
Ruby family- Vintage Port — top years, decades of ageing
- LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) — accessible, single year
- Ruby/Reserve — young, fruity

The dry revolution
Since the 1990s the same Port grapes make acclaimed dry Douro reds — concentrated, mineral table wines like Barca Velha.
