Crown Royal was created in 1939 by Samuel Bronfman of Seagram to honour the first visit of a reigning monarch to Canada — a blend of fifty whiskies presented to King George VI in a crown-shaped bottle and purple bag. Since 1968 it has been made at Gimli, Manitoba, a town founded by Icelandic settlers on the shore of Lake Winnipeg, where more than a million casks rest in lakeside warehouses through -30°C winters and +30°C summers. In 2016, its Northern Harvest Rye stunned the whisky world by taking World Whisky of the Year.
